What is ‘HYGGE’?

I get that question a lot. Why not, when it is a word that is so hard to translate?

The first reason I choose this name for my company is that I love Danish design; their attention to detail, soft minimalism, bright white, natural color’s with pop’s of blues, green’s or yellow and the always present focus on nature.

When looking for a name for my company I read an interior design book I received from my husband called Northern Delights by Emma Fexeus. It is a beautiful book packed with inspirational stories of Scandinavian design and designers.  Close to the beginning of the book I read about HYGGE and the danish value on their environment, being still and present in the moment as well as enjoying time with friends and family. The Danish bring this value effortlessly into their everyday life through design, architecture, interior and food as well. It might be the reason that they are considered the happiest people on earth (that is not an exaggeration)! At least that is why Meik Wiking, CEO of the Happiness Research Institute in Copenhagen spent years researching Hygge and even wrote a book about it called “The Little Book of Hygge“.  She says, “Hygge has been translated as everything from the art of creating intimacy to cosiness of the soul to taking pleasure from the presence of soothing things.”

So…this is my vision as well;

“To create spaces that tells a story as well as helps people be present in the moment. To move away from all the noise and focus on one another in a beautiful environment.”

Here is what HYGGE looks like to me…
